Ruth: Introduction and Getting started……
Welcome to OUR study of Ruth!
I'm so happy we are doing this. What a way to start the New Year. We will go through Ruth in a verse by verse fashion. I like verse by verse. It keeps things in context.
First, like I said in the email – I'll be the instigator/coordinator. That just means, I'll supply the outline, basics, on-line weekly material and we'll go from there.
Second, I should probably tell you that I've never done (or completed) an actual group Bible study. Huh. I've attended a couple. Not for long though. (Don't give me that look) Something else always got in the way. Poor excuse I know. But, if you are like me, and I'm guessing you are, then jobs, children, husbands, lives, etc. get in the way of attending a weekly meeting. I don't know about you but I think I would pull my hair out thinking I had to add another time slot to my already hectic and over-scheduled week. That is why I am going to do my best to see if this on-line study will work.
I told you the above to explain my approach to studying the Bible. I do my very best to read my Bible daily. I get up early because I know that is the only time during the day I will be completely and utterly alone. When I read, I start with the first chapter and first verse of a book of the Bible and then I read it daily - straight through – until I get to the end of that book. This starts my day out with a conversation with God. If I can encourage you do make one change this year it's to read your Bible each and every day. Prayer is you talking to God and the Bible is God talking to you.
Basics:
- The Study of Ruth will take approximately 5 weeks.
- Weeks will run from Monday through Sunday.
- Homework: (I heard you sigh) Read. Comment. Pray. (Easy huh?)
- If you don't want to comment on anything specific, that's okay. No pressure. Maybe you might just want to say "I read the chapter this week" or "I didn't read it this week" or "Hi, I'm still here". No pressure.
- Do the weekly reading, commenting and praying at 3 p.m or 3 a.m. in your pjs if you want. Up to you.
- I strongly suggest that you read and study during a quiet time of the day for you. That's why it's on-line – so we can choose what time is best for us. It's very hard to stay focused on anything with a kid screaming "MOM!" or hubby asking what's for dinner or have you seen his lucky shorts. (I won't tell if you burned them just to get rid of them. Promise.)
By the way, this isn't a plug but my bible is a Ryrie Study Bible – meaning Charles Ryrie wrote the study notes at the bottom of the pages. It's the bible I bought with my dad in 2003. It has all my scribbled notes in the margins. I love it. It's about to come apart at the seams but when I look at it I think of the saying "A bible that is falling apart belongs to someone who isn't"……. I hope that you will want to make that your bible motto too.
Disclaimer: I am NOT a Bible expert, theology expert, religion expert, Christianity expert, or any other kind of expert. What I do consider myself an expert in is not always knowing the answer and being a continual student. The point to this study is for us to learn together!
Last but not least:
- Read the weekly assignment.
- Look up the additional "side-note" verses. All the verses.
- Check behind me. Remember, I'm no expert. Don't trust what I say just because I said it.
Look. It. Up.
- The main focus is learning and growing closer to God. He might not speak to me in the same way He speaks to you.
- Don't make it a chore. Enjoy it!
Feel free to read ahead and study ahead.
Last thing, please, please comment at the end of each week's page.
If you finish on Monday – comment.
If you don't finish until 11:59 a.m. Sunday – comment.
This is how we will do this as a group – by leaving our thoughts and comments at the end. See? It's a GROUP thing. (smile)
Besides, if you don't comment, I'm coming to your house. And I'm wearing my pjs. The flannel ones. With Donald Duck on them. Just joking.

I finished reading the book of Ruth. I love this book. This has always been a very intimate book for me. I love the story. I love the example. I love the assurance of redemption and being "taken care of"...and living each day and night to trust and please Him.
Hmmm...Kimmie, et. al. I am posting, and I can see my own comment...but you cannot? I didn't select Truthsayer as my name...I picked Lisa, but it shows up as Truthsayer.
Let me know if you see this, or not.
Love y'all,
Lisa
Hey Lisa!
I can see you now (your photo) - lol! A few minutes ago, I could see the first comment but it didn't look like you were "following".
I like Ruth too. It's one of those books that I believe there is something for everybody to connect with.
love ya!
Kim
I commented last week but my comment never showed. I am going to send you the 2 addresses of the people who told me they wanted to join. Love ya. Kjo
Kjo,
I think I had the permissions for commenting messed up but that is fixed now so comment away!
And we would love to include the other two people! Either send me their email, forward it or just give them this link and tell them to come on - we'd love to have them!
love ya!
Kimmie
P.s -

Lisa meet Kjo.

Ps. I love that we are starting with Ruth for another reason. My grandma's name was Ruth. She died when I was in 5th grade but it doesn't feel that long ago. She used to play the piano, and every time I hear "Blessed Assurance" I lose it, because she played that one a lot. I don't think of this about anyone else, but I think she looks down on us from Heaven. She made a blanket for me that is on Christian's bed, and he says that when he goes to heaven she will find him. And she would not have left anyone behind, either, just as our Biblical Ruth didn't leave Naomi. So here we go, into the new year with out new Bible study. I can't wait! :)
And hi Lisa! :) from Kelley
Good morning, Kim, Lisa and Kelly!
As Kim knows, I go by my online nickname Paper~ but you can all call me Joanna.
The last time I had Bible study was in my college years.
Last night, I read Ruth 1 and 2 out loud to my partner, after our girls went to bed. Reading Ruth again after such a long time, brought back memories of when I was a child and spent Easter holidays at my cousins. My aunt who was then (early 80's) an active member her congregation is now preacher. In their home were different Bibles, and I enjoyed growing up with the illustrated Bible, which I read during our holidays there.
Wishing you all a lovely Monday!
Joanna :)
good morning everyone, I am Elena
Author - unknown but thought to be Samuel.
I am using the amplified bible so don't slap me!
This book took place somewhere between 500BC and 1050BC Wow, talk about hard times!
It was the first time I have read Ruth. I did enjoy the story very much.
I had much appreciation for Ruth that she would go with her MIL and not stay behind. I think it is just a story of obeying and following the truth. It brought up in my that one should not just concentrate on what is right in front of us, that even though we do not see we should still have faith in things to come.
Now... this is nothing of what I posted and lost Kim, so here I go selecting anon... It will work!!
Hello and greetings Kelley, Kim, Joanna and Elena : )
I know I already posted, but I am touched by Elena's comments, since she has never read Ruth b4.
"Obeying and following the truth"? Yes! In spite of what things look like. Forsaking the obvious and common response, by returning to what was familiar to you before finding the truth. Heading boldly into the future and pressing into the truth...following hard after it, no matter what things look like.
My future belongs completely and solely to Him.
Blessings all!!!
Lisa
You guys are too funny with the different Bible version comments! I promise I was just joking about that. That was a standing family joke until my Daddy passed away. As for using a different translation.....I might even have a family member who uses something other than King James. ha ha! Just teasing! Seriously though - I'm simply humbled that you ladies would take the time out of your busy schedules to read a book of the Bible on my request. Very cool indeed!
Kjo,
We have been friends for so long and I didn't realize your grandmother's name was Ruth. What a beautiful story and I know you miss her. And sweet Christian saying she will find him when he gets to Heaven. It makes me want to squeeze and hug him when I see him next. I think I will do just that!
Hi Joanna! I love that you read the first couple of chapters out loud to your partner! What a great way to strengthen and share things in our relationships.
Happy Monday to you too!
Elena - Bless your heart for your perseverance! I know what a difficult time you've had trying to post a comment and I appreciate the time and effort it took to get one to "stick". lol!
Thanks for posting the timeline for us. That gives us an idea of how long ago we are looking at. Nice addition!
Lisa,
Yes, you and Elena are right - following even when the future is uncertain is the way to go. It's quite the test of faith too. But, when we keep in mind that God is in control and He has a plan, it makes all the difference in the world.
As always, looking forward to the insight you will bring to this study!
To All:
We are off to a great start! It's just Day 1 and the participation has blown me away! I take no credit for this as I truly believe this was God and His idea. I love it!
I can't tell you enough how thankful I am for the friendship and how wonderful it is to have you join me in this study. (This goes for all of you who haven't gotten to commenting yet but are joining us in the study! I can't wait to hear your thoughts!)
My thoughts....
What you all have posted so far has given me much to think about and consider. I knew we would all see things from a different view but I failed to realize the uniqueness each person would bring with them. It's like several people standing on opposite sides of a statue and each describing what they see. They are all looking at the SAME statue but each will describe it just a little differently because their views are not completely the same.
I like the point of Ruth following Naomi even when she didn't know anything about where she was going or what was going to happen. She knew it was the right thing to do. This point touched home for me recently. I can't share the details as I'm not the only person it has to do with but something in my life might change before long. Nothing big - just change. I don't like change either. So at first, I was a little upset and started to pray. I was on the verge of praying "God, don't let this happen - I don't like it and I want things to stay the same" when I felt God nudge me and say something along the lines of "Do you want to keep this or see what else I have in store? I can do either but unless you trust Me, you're gonna miss the blessing." So, I'm gonna see what He has planned!
Hi All -
Loved all of your comments so far. I have always loved this book and am excited to officially be studying it. One of my favorite bible verses is in the first chapter of this book - but i'll comment on it next week.
As far as the book - it stands out to me that Ruth is an "outsider" but she puts her faith in God and is blessed in so many ways.
I have read before that the "theme" of this book is SALVATION. Her life goes from low to high many different times: poverty to wealth, widow to wife, childless to mother. As hard as it is during our times of low moments we have to try to remember that not only are we going through the moment to learn from it, depend on God more - but what's to come will be better.
Have a great week guys Look forward to talking about Chapter 1 with you.
Oh and KJo ... the Christian comment had me on the verge of tears. Very sweet that little guy of yours!!!
Sharon
Sharon,
I can't wait to get to chapter 1 to find out which verse you are talking about!
You bring up another good point - that Ruth was an "outsider" and one in many, many ways. I bet we could take that to a whole new level on how we are outsiders too.
I also love how you brought up the many repeated highs and lows and the Salvation theme. Awesome!
(We'll both have to stop by Christian's class tomorrow and squeeze him!)
I left a big long comment yesterday and looks like it was eaten.
In a nutshell, I had said that Ruth stands out to me as a lesson of how God provides when we aren't looking. He put people in her life to take her to places she never dreamed she would go.
It gives me hope when I'm feeling down on myself.
Sherry
Sherry,
Ruth is definitely a book about hope. Thanks for bringing that up!
